Mixes Round 1

Here it goes with the first round of recommended mixes to check out! If you want your mix featured here, send the link to dezm101@yahoo.com, or leave a comment below. Thanks!

HOUSE / TECHNO

To start off we want to share a standout mix from Laurent Garnier, the techno innovator who always has a unique sound in his mixes. This set was recorded live at JB’s in Nagoya, Japan and is presented by Christian Smith’s Tronic Radio.

Chris Santana rocks that funky tech house with his “Moonshake Radio” series.  High energy basslines collide with subtle melodies and floating harmonies over tight percussion.

Check out this deep set from Osunlade. His mixes are always well crafted and a pleasure to listen to. Really a DJ who embodies the idea of taking a journey.

Here is an amazing set from techno legend Cari Lekebusch. This one is from the Cassini podcast series. His sets range from quirky to deep and dark and this one has a few surprises for you.

DR LO brings the deep chunky tech house for this set. Very funky and refined with an infectious groove throughout. The perfect blend of subtle vocals, atmospheric melodies and bumpin beats.

DUBSTEP / BASSLINE

An example of quality dubstep from Bionica,”weight for it” is a diverse set encompassing a more complete look at dubstep as a whole, classic wobbles bounce in and out with futuristic sub bass interwoven. It really works up into some heavier stuff by the end, moving the progression along nicely.

A killer mix from DJ Q for Mixmag. Serious bass business here, great stuff for blasting on a big system.

DOWNTEMPO / AMBIENT

To finish up this round here is a quality set from the amazing Mix Master Morris AKA Irresistible Force. He is also joined by Matt Black (of Coldcut), and when these guys are on the decks you can be sure it is top notch selections. Very chill and spacey, this is one to put on, relax and get lost in the sounds.

Underground

Like the dawn creeping in at night, underground music affects us all, whether we realize it or not. It is both the result and the catalyst for popular music, dictating the trends and styles before they appear to a wider audience. It is the emotion and soul of a world run by technology and progress, it is an expression of survival, without the need for monetary gain and recognition, it is quite simply – art for art’s sake.

In our current EDM saturated world, it is hard to remember what it was like to go to a party or a club to hear nothing but new tunes, to go out and have an experience instead of a pre-packaged festival where you are guaranteed to have fun because you shelled out hundreds of dollars.  What was the music like before there were LED masks, Superstar DJs and cash cow promotions companies?

Turns out, if you look at the underground – it has mostly been unchanged, aside from a steady evolution. Because unlike popular culture, it does not rely on what is the most hype, or high priced marketing brand, it looks at quality behind a genuine aesthetic rather than a monthly trend.  The result is usually a well crafted, and thought out connection between the music and listener – both parties have to make an effort to unify themselves in the aesthetic experience: the listener cannot just go find any album or artist they have never heard of and expect to like it, just like the artist must find a way to get their music across the boundary of being unknown.

The aim of 2550 is to highlight this interesting point of culture at the moment. Where the DJ is more of a marketing commodity than a risk-taking artist. We aim to promote the value of DISCOVERY of new music, instead of being spoonfed the latest ‘bangers’ and tracks for you to ‘rage’ to. There is a point of open-mindedness that seems to be all but gone from our culture; since everyone is a DJ, no one wants to hear anything new, people walk into a club and start demanding to hear ‘their’ song, the one they want to hear and they think everyone else feels that way, except everyone else has their OWN song they feel the same way about.

Its all about the music. It always has been, and always will be. The intent here is to stand up for what is right, and that is to bring QUALITY over quantity. SUBSTANCE over hype. The interest and the love is there, its just focused too much on being the same as everyone else, comfort in numbers as they say. I can’t stand to let that happen when there is soo much good music out there that is deserving of attention and appreciation.

So with that, welcome to the new 2550. We will be mostly focusing on sharing the best underground music and mixes we come across with some nice reviews for you. Also be on the lookout for posts on art, rants and just random fun stuff like videogames. Always, feel free to voice your opinion! There is no right or wrong here (as long as its in good taste) so say what you need to!
